Frightmare Manor is a popular haunted house spot in East Tennessee. It’s a place that has garnered many a scream, created the beginnings of plenty of nightmares. But did you know that a historic coverup makes the mansion one of the most haunted places in Tennessee? Prepare to be scared.

Frightmare Mansion
The home was originally owned by Jeremiah Lexer, shown here with his family. He was a well-known Tennessee transplant who hid a debilitating mental illness. It is said that he was schizophrenic and bipolar, a murderous cocktail that the grandfather of three couldn’t fight for long.

On the morning of July 5th, 1902, Jeremiah used a freshly sharpened ax to murder his family in their beds. He then threw himself from the top window to his death. Police records indicate that they believed his time of death was roughly 3:25 am.

The murders were investigated by the Hamblen County Sheriff, who was quoted saying, ” Seeing so much gruesome torture and murder to innocent life was truly sickening. I vomited and had to go outside to regain my composure.”

As the home was investigated they uncovered an even darker secret: the bodies of almost 30 more murdered people, wanderers from the town, were haphazardly buried on the property. Although people had gone missing for awhile, many though they had simply lost their way in the mountains and succumbed to the elements. Not so. They were brutally tortured and killed by the unwell Lexer.

It’s said that he performed inhumane experiments on his victims, later burying them in the woods by his home. The known body count is at 27, but some believe he may have killed as many as 100.
